Just a little info, I'm not sure if it has been said before but "Champloo" is an Okinawan form of stir fry. Which can include tofu, various meats, vegies and even noodles.

So if Champloo in a stir fry, why did they call the anime "Samurai Champloo"? Maybe it's some sort of poetic name that makes you think? I don't know.

I always thought Champloo was like a play on "engrish type" words... like Champloo = Shampoo or sumthin..idunno hehehe...But I like the idea of "Samurai Champloo meaning Samurai Stir Fry...meaning a Mixture of Many different things that happen all thruout this anime. Ie: *MINOR SPOILERS* that Dutch dude with blonde hair with the give away accent, and the OPIUM incident where they became friends for one night..LOL The show really does live up to it's name.

Correction: Champloo means mix things up in general. Well that's at least what the article in Newtype said

ADV prolly didn't specify enough in defining the word in reference to what was being said. Which vol. of Azumanga was that in? I have 1,2, and just got 4, Bestbuy didn't have 3 ~_~ and in my quick scan didn't see it.

That makes sense, with the hiphop aesthetic and the idea of SC as a mix of characters, fighting styles, influences, and stories.

チャンプルー [Champuruu] is indeed an okinawa-specific dish, which is a stir-fry (as opposed to being the Japanese word for stir-fry)
Doesn't stop it being used to mean 'mix things up' either, but up North the people I've spoken to aren't familiar with that use.
Makes perfect sense to me =)

I have to agree with Benkyo. The more i think about why the name "Samurai Champloo" was given, the more confusing it gets. It's was a nice name when i first herd about it and i couldn't care less on the meaning. Unless it contributes to the storyline somehow.

Well, first we had 'Cowboy Bebop', then 'Samurai Champloo', so what's next? Any guesses?
'Vigilante Jazz'?
'Pioneer Doowop'?
'Revenant Falafals'?
place your bets =)

Maybe they could make one relating to the present...but then I have yet to see one taking place in the medieval days...that would be interesting.

Lets see here...
Sci-fi...
Historical fiction...
How about say the Khanate times in Asia. That would be really cool.
Or ummm...Standard Fantasy Time.

'Mongol sushi'! That's it! or maybe just 'Jingis Khan' - a hanami favourite! The possibilities are endless...

Nice ideas all!
I'd watch em.
I would add some of the medieval timelines in Russia of the Czars.
Peter the Great or Ivan the Terible times.
I think there is lots to be expolred there.
Just my 2 cents.

well thats is interesting to know that champloo might mean stir fry noodles..... the first time i saw it and wonder about the name .... i thought that it was named after the producer to add to the wierd style it already percieved. CHAMPLOO is the last name of one of the producers... but it seems my theory was wrong.
thanks for the info
your respectifully
