Full Version: Viz Named Bakuryuuha "backlash Wave"....

This is what I mostly posted on ANN in the anime forum http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2...pic.php?t=6129: I wonder what on earth they(Viz) are thinking, come on I strongly believe that they could of done a much BETTER attack name than that. The name kinda makes me laugh hysterically and I prefer the literal translation of it like Dragon Twister Blast or anything thats not "Backlash Wave". What are you guys favorite translation of this attack and what do you think of it? I'm going to laugh again when they name Kongousouha a really silly inane name.... I just know they will lol. First Kaede YE then this whats next?
WoP
Yeah, I saw that translation on the adultswim website; my immediate reaction was *facepalm*

I can see it now.

Inuyasha: Oh yeah?! Take this! The Backlash Wave!

In my own opinion, "Bakuryuuha" is just one of those words that should never be translated. Of course, I think ALL the attack names should be left untranslated, but I shudder to think of how the voice actors would butcher them. I mean, if they can't even pronounce "Kagome" correctly, imagine what they would do to words like "Hiraikotsu" or "Kongosouha". I can hear that one too -

Sango: Hee-ray-coat-sue!

I'm sure it's just me, but I actually think "Backlash Wave" sounds cooler than the literal translation. At least it's not as bad as "Iron Reaver Soul Stealer." wink.gif

They can leave the literal translation of Kongousouha, though. "Diamond Spear Blast" sounds plenty good to me. Of course, it will be forever until that makes it to the dub (considering we won't even see it in the original for months more), so there's plenty of time to debate over that one. tongue.gif
Moonbeamdanser
Actually, what DOES Sango actually say on the dub? ^^; I can't ever bring myself to watch it...
deedala
Sango, in the dub, shouts "Hiraikotsu!!" Even with her american accent, it sounds fine. In fact, it makes me very happy when I hear her shout it.

"Backlash Wave" doesnt sound too bad either, I guess.

It could all be a lot worse in my opinion.
Kagome
Actually, I swear the first time Sango says Hiraikotsu in the anime, its in Japanese in the dub..then after that..its something, I forgot, but im 90% sure she says Hiraikotsu at least once...

~Kagome

Oops, Dee posted right before me...heh

She does? ....shows how much I watch the dub.....

Yep, Hiraikotsu is about the only attack name they left untranslated. tongue.gif She even pronounces it correctly (gets the 'r' right and everything). Kinda weird that they left that one but changed all the others. Oh well, I'll count my blessings... in the manga, they translated it as "Boomerang Bone." XD

Spectie and I rule, because we're dub fans.

I wish they'd leave all of the attacks untranslated, especially in the dubs. It is shocking that they left "Hiraikotsu", but I suspect that is because they couldn't come up with a domestication term to match what Sango says. So they just left it. To me it proves that the people doing this at Viz haven't a clue. Amazing that "Hiraikotsu" is an OK Japanese term, but everything else has to be domesticated. And don't get me started on the blasted manga...*sigh*

I love spanish (Latin America) version, Bakuryuuha stayed like that, Bakuryuuha happy.gif

They only thing that changed was the "Kaze no Kizu" they translated it as "Cutting Wind" - Viento Cortante - it's not a bad translation. tongue.gif

Oh and Kazaana too, they translated it as "Black Void", -Agujero Negro- Hiraikotsu stayed like that tongue.gif
Kuro
Everytime I see "cutting wind" I keep thinking something much less elegant. That involves bathroom humor. XD

Ah well.

My first reaction on hearing "Backlash Wave" was.. "Well, it's much more accurate than Iron Reaver." At least it's not quite as campy-sounding. I think I could get used to it. Although, I would have been totally charmed if they'd have gone with something like "EXPLODING CURRENT KA-BOOMIE!!!" (which is actually quite literal). o_O

I actually think they could have just left "Wave" out and just gone with "BACKLASH!"

And YES, Kongousouha is fine as is. "DAIMOND SPEARS!"

And FEH!! *countermarries Kappei* XD For the record... NO ONE will EVER match the sheer and amazing beauty of Kappei's voice when he screams "BAKURYUUHA!" wink.gif

I...would have to agree. wub.gif

Kappei's baka is quite nice too. I think it's the "bak" sound that is really just sexy coming out of his mouth. *giggles* wub.gif

I'm sorry.. that's just... XD

Well, with the English language is more difficult to pronounce Japanese words.. with spanish is not that hard, cause if you write "Hiraikotsu" (of course, romanji tongue.gif)you pronounce it like that, "Hiraikotsu" with english language you have to say something like "Hee-ray-cout-sue" .. so I suppose that's why they changed "Bakuryuuha" uh, and the other names..
white fluffy
Doesn't japanese and spanish have the same pronounciation of vowels? People who speak spanish also roll their r's too don't they? English is the weird language with the inconsistant pronunciations and stuff...anyway...

My first reaction of hearing Iron Reaver Soul Stealer was o_O damn...that's long.
Which reminds me, what do they call Hijin Kessou? I've only heard him say it once and I couldn't make out what he was saying...

Go Sango's VA for saying Hiraikotsu! XD And also Kagura's VA for saying "Kagura" with a japanese "r" ^^
harrellj
I believe Hijin Kessou was dubbed as Blades of Blood, which seems a fair description smile.gif As for spanish and japanese pronunciation (ugh... can't spell at 5am), there are differences. Plus, in spanish, not all the r's are rolled, though some people do speak that way. If I remember correctly (and its been a few years since I took a spanish class so I could be remembering wrong), the only tmes in spanish that an r is supposed to be rolled is if it's rr (which is an actual letter in the alphabet) or is the beginning of a word. There might be a couple of exceptions to that rule, but I don't remember.
Moonbeamdanser
Ah, the fond memories of taking spanish in high school. ^^;

Yes, RR is actually considered a letter, just like CH and LL ^^ And it does get rolled. There is an accent on the single R, but it's not elongated.

Kinda like difference between the o and the ou sounds in japanese I guess. ^^;;
Faye
Actually yes, the RR and R are rolled.. it's just depends of the word ^^;

With Kagura for example, we pronounce it like Japanese does, Sesshoumaru, Naraku, Bakuryuuha, they all sound the same to say it in Japanese than in Spanish. Except that in de Spanish dub.. they changed "Rin" to "Lin" blink.gif we can easily say "Rin" so I don't know why they changed it..

Well, maybe because they pronounce "Kirara" as "ki-LA-LA"
I don't know, but in my humble opinion "Rin" sounds better than "Lin'.

Still... "backlash wave"
::fufufu::

The unimaginative attack-names that they come up with, makes Inuyasha sound pre-etty stupid. :P

...haven't...laughed this hard...in...a long time... *gasp*

Darn it, now I want so badly to hear Richard Ian Cox yell "EXPLODING CURRENT KA-BOOMIE!!!" Please??? Pretty please??

...although, the further the dub gets into the series, the more he's been noticibly trying harder in the to pronounce what Japanese names there are left in the dub--it's probably a lot less embarassing for him to just shout "Backlash Wave". tongue.gif

It's because Hiraikotsu is the name of the weapon itself. They leave all the names of the weapons untranslated from what I see.

I would've preferred the attack names themselves left untranslated as well, but "Backlash Wave" doesn't sound bad at all. I'm just glad it's not "Purple Monkey Dishwasher" or something truly silly. wink.gif
Amethyst_Scream
I for one, like "Purple Monkey Dishwasher".

With attack names like that... people would rush in large numbers to the japanese versions, which I would have handy (for some reason).
That would be the day, when I would be truely happy. O_O

Still.. Purple Monkey Dishwasher...
I want an attack like that... I would dance to the dub with paper fans, with Ranma-jelly-eyes.

Anyway... Thinking up attack names are pretty hard. The mangakas have to get the perfect kanji, and the illustations of vague meanings...
The dubbers only have to make an attack that doesn't sound ridiculous, and corresponds with the mouth-moving.
