Full Version: Gilgamesh Is Quite Misunderstood

You know what i find lately about Gmesh... a lot of people dont seem to like it...
But I love it, the staff that works on it loves it... and I definately believe its a great series.
Its just that its not your typical hack and slash action but it takes some thinking...
Gmesh is a very dark anime and it has a strange style to it...
It also relies heavily on symbolism and plays on mythology.
I guess generally people dont understand that and just go "BLAH it sucks".
I, for one, like anime that are "different" than the normal stuff...
Gmesh shows great promise, and how can people judge from one episode?
I've seen this just like with Deve... they judge from one episode and then focus on one thing bad and call it crap...
Geez!
I can just tell you guys, sure its different, but ur gonna miss out on a great series if you scrap it right away.
(...ep 2 is weird too... but thats the style of the anime...)

Ep 1 looked pretty cool, remains to be seen on the long term whether the symbolism and overall smartness will stay. I like the harsch and dark graphical design and atmosphere. (And wouldn't have noticed that lisp thing if nobody had commented out on it before)

The reference to (was it evangelion?) at the beginning was pretty fun.
Oogs
honestly, i didn't like the first ep, mostly becuase i had no frickin clue what was going on. that's common though (first two eps of rah were rather confusing too... now look at it) and things could turn out for the best. either way, i think that it's at least worth looking at the first few eps and then deciding on it's suckyness, or lack of.
Shiori
I did like the first episode actually, and I would like to continue watching the series. A lot of people just don't want to think when they watch anime, and hey that's fine, but I am not one of those people. That's why I liked Last EXILE so much, because it kept me thinking. I gave Divergence Eve a chance, I'll try anything, but I just couldn't get into it. I watched 4 episodes of it and it still didn't appeal to me much. So I say keep up the good work guys. wink.gif

Gilgamesh seems to be (I say seems as I've only seen 1 episode) the type of anime I enjoy. I like anime that make you think, symbolism (ala Eva or RahXephon) are just great.

I have to say though, I don't care for the initial character designs, they seem oddly familiar. Very detailed eyes, large expressive mouths, and the rest of the face just kind of ... well yeah.

The drawing reminds me slightly of some scenes of RahXephon, but more often of the styles in the later episodes of Lain or even Boogiepop.
xorzisten
I totally liked ep 1 of Gilgamesh.
The story seems cool, the scenes are nice the SFX are super sw33t.
And the way those guys with the black robes and the cloned salemandars just wiped out the bad thugh like people, that was just totally sw33t to.

The only thing I dont like is the drawing style, its not very detailed and the characters faces looks kinda dead.

I will defently be watching ep 2.
Blood Troll
I love this show. It's wierd, dark, surrealistic and mystical. The best kind of anime, if you ask me. I seriously think it has the potential to become the most intellectual anime series of recent years.

Heavy on symbolic and mythology?

GilGamesh is belived to have been a real historical figure, who reigned in the third millennium BC.

after watching 1 eps I found quite funny , it seems that the author making alot mistake for example:
the stone figure of gilgamesh ,is holding lion on right hand but in anime he holding the lion on left hand.

by the way, Istar is a bitch , who think that she can have anything but rejected by gilgamesh. biggrin.gif

Yes well, whoever said anime writers couldnt take artist liscence? rolleyes.gif

I just got to watching the first episode of this, even though I've had it on my comp for awhile. I started to watch it a couple times earlier in the week but the eye creeped me out and I got scared and turned it off. I find no shame in sharing the fact that I like cute anime! it's my favorite kind--cute with lots of action. Usually I'm very picky about which serious anime series I'll watch. I need my "serious thinking anime" to be very catchy. By that I mean it needs to confuse me in a way that I think, "What the heck! I gotta watch more cause I can tell the explaination to that is going to be awesome!" Still with me? Yeah...but after watching the first episode of Gilgamesh, I'm definitly interested and it seems to me it's going to get very very interesting. The art style is also very unique, which can be quite refreshing. I actually really like the lips, they're...I dont know..they're just fun.

And random note...in the beginning of ep1 someone makes a face that is just too hilarious. And I definitly almost fell over laughing happy.gif

Deedala, I commend you.. Atleast you said that you love "CUTE" anime.

At first the animation style started to creep me out, but being a person who is weird and creepy at times, it grew on me..

I mean, I remember a little of the story of Gilgamesh, and I want to see how it plays into this version..

Also, notice most anime set anywhere near "present day" has something post apoctoloptic to it. Akira had the nuke going on in Tokyo, Blue Gener had the Blue invading the earth, look at Gundam series..
paintcat
I am also definitely interested in this series. Thanks for picking up one that's not so mainstream. Different strokes for different folks!

It's the Godzilla syndrom maybe? The "end of the world as we know it" is a popular premise in most genre's of entertainment, not just anime. What I think is great is all the different ways they've come up for the world to end. Especially in anime. Cuz it's like..GIANT BUGS INVADE! Hehehe, I just love the ridiculousness of it all, it makes it worth while happy.gif And it seems to me that Gilgamesh is going to have that same kind of excitement and creativity with their plot. The more I think about it, the more I cant wait to see where this story ends up!

Gil's got an interesting atmosphere to it but when those candlelight dudes turned into demon-golem-things then things went into the "wtf" realm. Mystic powers, teleportation I can handle but demon-golem-things? blink.gif

Hopefully ep3'll clear things up a bit. Plus I want to hear more from the Countess/Okita-sama.

All I can Xeph, is keep the eps coming! I like GMesh thus far, and it looks like things are going to get real intense real soon. Personally, I can't wait for Ep 3 to drop.

it seems to me that the 'symbolism' in this show is, like so many others, quite forced and actually rather shallow. it's like eva - the entire show was rife with misplaced & confused Christian 'symbolism' - so much so that it's pretty obvious the creators had no idea what they were talking about.

then we get RahXephon, which is a little more in-depth, basing itself on contemporary Atlantian mythology - but really it's still a very contrived story when you get down to it.

now we get 'gigamesh' which is, i suppose, based on ideas from the epic of gilgamesh, a terrible, terrible book that American high-school students are often forced to read - but in reality it seems like they just took some names from the book & stuck them onto different characters. this doesn't make the show more intelligent, since it's pretty obvious that the show's writers are not scholars in ancient literature - chances are they probably didn't read the book all the way through (and I can't blame them - i didn't read it either) and are just, as they say, 'making it up as they go along'.

which doesn't make it a bad show - i mean there's tons of Japanese animes out there that bastardize Chinese mythology - and there's probably a ton of American shows using utterly misconstrued conceptions of eastern mythology - it's just that the paradigm is getting, well, kind of tired... I mean, they don't really need the Gilgamesh element in this show - it doesn't really do anything to justify or advance the plot - so why can't they let it just be fiction? why 'legitimize' it with some sort of pseudo-historical 'symbolism'?

it seems kind of silly to me. I'll keep watching, tho.
Blood Troll
In what way are these plots "contrived"? Drawing names, symbolism and story elements from mythology is an old and perfectly legitimate way of making a sci-fi or fantasy story. In fact, when one thinks about it, what does "contrived" mean? In terms of storytelling, it means conveniently thinking something totally new up when your characters need it. In which case, EVERY story is contrived. In which case, the stories that draw from mythology would be less contrived than others.

I think I know what you mean, but the choice of wording confuses me.

About the Epic of Gilgamesh, I dunno if calling it a 'book' is very accurate. It's an epic poem, rather like Homer's works, only much older. And it's true, there is no connection between the anime and the epic that I've seen, aside from a few names. However, I'll bet anything that more will come up later.

Now, one last thing. I can understand not enjoying the Epic of Gilgamesh, but to call it terrible is somewhat ignorant. I never could make it through it myself, but if it weren't for epic poetry, story telling probably never would have made it past the verbal stage. We wouldn't even be watching our anime today if it weren't for stories like this one.

for me 'gilgamesh' and 'Shingetsutan Tsukihime' look like being the new anime's to fill the void left by LE's departure.
fullmetal alchemist is looking good

Just watched the first ep, and Gilgamesh looks like it has the makings of a really surreal trip. The plot's general disjointedness reminds me of the House of Secrets: Facade graphic novels...or at least the later, philosophical-ier eps of Evangelion. Truthfully, what drew me was the supposed "bastardization" of the Epic of Gilgamesh mentioned earlier in this thread. I love stories that play with religious (or religious-esque) imagery, particularly darkly religious imagery, so it's really good to be able to watch this. I also think the mark of how intelligent a story that happens to play with religious imagery is isn't by how accurately it follows the original images, but how well, indeed, things are "made up along the way" to build on the original religious concepts. There are shows from all over the place that can absolutely suck at playing with whatever cultural/religious concepts they've chanced upon. It's only been three eps into Gilgamesh, it's too early to tell or judge.

More importantly, I wouldn't have been able to discover this show on my own. So, really, thank you for subbing it and introducing it here!
JazzeroKi
I thought Gilgamesh is pretty weird too, but then I know like with Last Exile, I thought it was really weird until about episode 8, and I loved Last Exile. So I'll give Gilgamesh a chance too.
Kurt
Its going to get cancelled watch lol.

Story might be ok, but it doesnt make up for the cheap animation... it looks like a slideshow man...

I cant believe some of you compare this POS (piece of sh!t) to the heavenly Last Exile.

One of you said no one watched LE? Are you insane? trust me people watched LE fine.
Cheops
Dude, bashing in its own forum isn't cool, it has a tendency to lead to flame wars.
JazzeroKi
At first I was pretty hesitant about watching gilgamesh, but now that I've watched a few eps of it, I think it's a little better than what I originally thought. I'm still not overly crazy about the art work in it, but the story is interesting enough to keep my interest for atleast a few more episodes.
SiRiUsLi_SiC
i like gilgamesh, partly cuz i have heard the legend of the man become god. so ithink its kewl and for ppl sayin it looks cheap is bs. pls keep translating i always dwmld it when i see a new one. thnks for ur efforts u guys are the sh**. biggrin.gif
SiRiUsLi_SiC
sorry to take up bw. but i really never got into le i thought it was kinda lame. just my opinion. it was ok not the sh** like inuyasha. tongue.gif

Any series that spits out a couple of starting episodes in which you get almost absolutely no clue on how the characters are going to interact with one another futurely and what's their actual role within the imaginated world they're living in gets a thumbs up from me.

You get much more attached to characters that jump out on you misteriously, making you watch episode after episode in order to get to know them, tend to grow much more in touch with the user than those who storyline is boringly drawn step by step on the first few episodes.

As a viewer I feel the urge to be constantly surprised and for us who share that feeling I believe we've stumbled on what can be quite a surprising gloomy series.

( Plus, pos-apoc really hits the spot. cool.gif )
JazzeroKi
I know for me, I enjoy this series enough that I'm looking forward to episode 5.

I hope it doesn't get cancelled. If it does, I'll go crazy trying to figure out the plot from the episodes I seen. unsure.gif
Blood Troll
It wont get cancelled, trust me. If people like it here, people will like it in Japan, and I hate to say it, but it seems to have a pretty devoted following among those who have seen the subbed version.

Also, considering the amount of anime that airs, if they cancelled every show that wasn't extremely popular, none of it would ever come to an end.
