Ok, I'm WAY behind in watching IY eps, but something happened on EP 40 something... (YIKES, WAY BEHIND..) Lordy, I'll give spoiler space, not that anyone here probably needs it's... but..

Ok, this was the ep where Kagura was watching Rin when Sess and Jaken (however you spell that things name) get back from talking with the old tree. Rin is running toward Sess and he says "Rin, don't move" and she FREEZES - in mid-stride, one foot still in the air. Her eyes get wide and stay that way. My question is did Sess force her to stop with some sort of coercion, or do you think Rin just was odd that way? She has the same wide-eyed expresssion on her face and stays frozen in that position until he tells her to move, then she stretches.... so that's why I thought maybe he was controlling her, rather that her just being that still... Opinions?

Nah, I think it was all on her own. Rin pretty much worships her Sesshoumaru-sama, and she's still a kid after all, so it wasn't too far-fetched for her her to obey a command like that instantly--and literally.

Plus, it made for a really cute scene. happy.gif

(And most people here are up to around episode 120, so no need for a spoiler space when it come to something like that.)

Yeah, Sesshoumaru certainly wasn't controlling her or anything. She's undyingly loyal to him and will do whatever he says, so if he says "Don't move", you'd better bet she's gonna take that extremely literally. Besides, Rin's just a weirdo (I think Jaken even calls her that later in the scene).

Sesshoumaru's group is actually a pretty standard comic setup: The Idiot and the Straight Man. It's just that in this case, the Idiot role is played by two people (although I don't think I'd call Rin an idiot, since she is actually pretty smart. She's just cute is all) ^_^*. In American cinema, this type of setup is heavily used in police movies like Lethal Weapon, where one cop performs his duty without flaw or emotion, and his partner's a nutball.

I think anybody that rolls with Sesshoumaru would do the same.

If Jaken was told to freeze by Sesshoumaru Id bet anything he wouldnt move an inch.

what do u think
UFO9
No, Jaken is too much an idiot to just auto-freeze like Rin. She's still young and innocent, so she never needs to know why Sesshoumaru says something, his word is law to her, so the fact that he says it means it's all-important.

Jaken would most likely pause, but nag and nag about "Oh Sesshoumaru-sama, what's wrong, is there trouble, blah blah blah" and might even question it before freezing. This is why he often gets kicked or hit or almost drowned or have rocks thrown at him (that is my favorite Jaken scene ever, when he's being annoying, and from off-screen a rock comes flying and nails him in the head, and it's Sesshoumaru that threw it).

Jaken's loyal and all, but not as unquestioningly obedient.

A good example would be when they first picked up Rin. Jaken's all "why are we saving her, we're not keeping her are we, what are you thinking". I think the only situation where Rin has been like that is in regards to Kohaku, and even then it's not exactly the same.
Jyleth
Well, I didn't REALLY think he was controlling her, the only thing that made me wonder was that expression on her face. Since I like the Sess/Rin scenes, I tend to watch them more than once. smile.gif

So far, my favorite Jaken and Sess scene indeed the rock throwing scene. That was very funny. Worthy of watching over again...

However, the quip from Sess of "Pull yourself together, Jaken" after revived Jaken-in-two-pieces was really quite funny. Didn't seem like a Sess quip at all. How could he say that with a straight face????

On another note... Most people who surround themselves with people of lesser strength/intelligence tend to be very insecure... Sess's character doesn't seem like one that would be so insecure, but.... it begs the question of WHY his chosen companions are significantly weak.

I wouldn't exactly consider them "chosen" exactly.

In that episode dedicated to Jaken, it seems as thought it's kind of a fluke that Sess accidentally helps him, and Jaken being the idiot he is decided to dedicate his whole life to him and to follow him around. Sesshoumaru prolly figured there was no real need to kill him, so he just gave him the head staff so it'd be one less thing for him to have to carry around. Maybe there's a whole youkai law/general rule about life debts too, that Sesshoumaru went along with.

Rin, I think he kept her around out of curiosity. She wasn't afraid of him, nor did she hate him like most humans. And Tenseiga made him save her. He prolly wants to find out why, and figures if the sword thought it was a worthy cause, there's gotta be something to it.

So it's more just flukes that anything on both their parts. He didn't seek them out and be like "you will be my loyal follower now". It was more "hey, I'm your loyal follower now cuz you're cool".

Actually, the anime's explanation of Jaken confused me, because it... well... just didn't seem right.

The way I see it, Jaken is a counterpart to Myouga. Myouga served Inuyasha's father while he was alive, and when the father died, Myouga's service was passed on to Inuyasha. Who's to say Jaken wasn't the same? Inu no Taisho had two sons, thus probably two retainers, whose services would be inherited by each son once he died. Inuyasha got Myouga, Sesshoumaru got Jaken.

Therefore, Jaken is almost identical to Tenseiga in that respect. He's someone that Sesshoumaru probably feels he has no use for, but since he respects his father's will, he won't get rid of him. I mean, that's just my take on it, since I think it makes more sense than the anime's explanation.

Of course, this still means that Sesshoumaru is not "forcing" Jaken to come along with him by any means. As for Rin, there's been quite a few plausible explanations as to why he initially took care of her, so I won't bother repeating them here. But I still think it at least partially had to do with the whole "father's will" thing, since Tenseiga sort of pressured him into reviving her.

Sesshoumaru did not inherit Jaken. Jaken use to be a king of his own demon race but was almost defeated in battle until Sesshoumaru saved him (who still looked the same as you see him now) and has followed Sesshoumaru since.

That is not a spoiler, since it's not the riginal story.
That was in the Hyounekozoku triology, right?
So it wasn't in the manga, it was just a filler... yeah.
I and myself is still a strong believer in Jaken,
and that HE is the real bad guy in the Inuyasha saga.
He's soon gonna backstab his beloved Sesshoumaru,
and he shall reveal that he was the one behind Naraku!

Oh lord. For some reason I really just cannot stand Jaken. He drives me crazy.
I dont know what I'd do with myself if it came out that he was the mastermind of the entire Naraku thing. dry.gif

Actually, I think it was... episode 79, which was a couple episodes after the Hyounekozoku thing. That was the filler episode where Jaken was trying to steal Tetsusaiga. And since, yes, it was anime-only, that's why I was posing my own hypothetical explanation rather than just believing what the anime told me.

Yeah! Then Jaken will finally get the respect he deserves! I humble myself before the almighty green one. I hope he survives to the end of the manga.

Look simply put rin sees sesshoumaru as her father. he saved her after all and she has that loyalty to him cuz he will protect her. I mean when sess says somethigng, she'll obey cuz its like her dad.. she lvoes that demon to death.. XD..and its quite a cute scene.. i can imagine guys trying to hit on rin and end up running into a pissed off sesshoumaru.. tehy'll freeze too from shock... roar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!hehe...
Choko
I found this in a doujinshi translation, but...it sounds like something that could happen, given the right circumstances laugh.gif

1
[Rin has a fistful of flowers and is approached by a couple of punks]
Cigarette Punk:

"Yo yo, cutie."
Bald Punk:
"How 'bout you go on a date with us. Nothin' to be scared of."
2
Cigarette Punk [grabs Rin]:

"It's okay, we'll just have ya pour us tea. C'mon, kid!"
Rin:
"KYAAA!"
3
[but whenever there's a Rin in danger...]

4
[... there's a Sesshoumaru there to slice off the heads of the guys threatening her]

... ... ... ... ... ...

-_-* There are so many things I could say but... I won't. ^_^*

Anyway, anyway, yes, I think Rin considers Sesshoumaru a father figure more than anything else. Sesshoumaru on the other hand... well, I'm not really sure what he thinks of Rin. He doesn't pick on her like he does with Jaken, but she also doesn't tend to say stupid or out-of-place things, either.

Honestly, I don't know whether Sess takes care of Rin because he likes her, or whether he feels like he's supposed to. Now, before all you rabid Sess/Rin fans come after me with paintball guns demanding to know why I'd question our resident Fluffy's love of his miniscule companion, I shall explain myself. Sesshoumaru didn't really revive Rin of his own will, but was rather coerced into doing so by Tenseiga. Now, to Sess, this probably means that some great big dog in the sky would like it if he took care of this kid. And since Sesshoumaru DOES know his place in the whole pecking-order of things, he's not gonna argue. So, if that's the case, he may just have Rin along and protect her because he feels it's Fate's will or something, not because he necessarily likes her.

Sorry for my lack of a romantic attitude towards the situation, but I felt like looking at things from a completely neutral standpoint. However, this is a case where I kinda hope my theory is wrong. It's just something that could make sense without making Fluffy seem at all sentimental.
ASNKgenius
that is so funny! lol... but still sess is more of rin's fatherly figure.. i think she'll probably end up w/ kohaku after all the kid has saved her life before so why not? it's probably a LONG shot w/ shippou... but she has better odds w/ kohaku.. it'd be funny to see kohaku return back to normal after rin kisses him XD... not to mention it works since they're both technically dead XD.
Vlion
I think Sessh primarily works on a basis of obligations.
He saved Jaken, and Jaken honoured that saving by following him, so it would be incorrect to make light of the debt.
Rin gave him aid, therefore he helped Rin, but the latter aid was greater than the former, so he allows her to follow him.

well technically Rin is not dead since Kokaku is in a state of limbo cuz of the shard while Rin is in a living state cuz Sesshoumaru used the Tenseiga

I havent missed ya ASNK =P (GAT-X252)
