Let's see if I can squeeze all of my favorite bishounen into a top ten list...
Here goes nothing:
1. Spike Spiegel (Cowboy Bebop)
The epitome of all things cool, he's my favorite character of all time, period. He is ultra slick and laid-back; nothing seems to faze the guy except the shadows of his syndicate past. He's also one of the most quotable anime characters I can think of ("Don't leave things in the fridge"). And he's either the luckiest guy in the world to get out of all the situations he does... or the unluckiest for getting into those situations in the first place. I haven't quite decided which.
2. Miroku (Inuyasha)
He's one of the most complex characters I can think of. He's smart, powerful (possibly the most powerful human in IY), has a pretty good sense of humor, and manages to coolly deal with a generational curse that's destined to kill him if he doesn't kill Naraku first. Very cool. And yet, his pervertedness is one of the chief sources of comic relief on the show--amazing how someone as smart as he is can turn into such an idiot when a beautiful woman comes along.
3. Inuyasha (Inuyasha... is there an echo in the building...?)
There's something about the tough-guy-on-the-oustsde, big-softy-on-the-inside formula that appeals to me more than just about anything else. I love Inuyasha's tender side, even though he constantly hides it behind all of his "feh"-ing and cursing and grumbling. I think the way he's torn between his conflicting youkai and human sides is brilliant character development, the kind of stuff I wish we saw more of in anime. The love triangle between him, Kikyou, and Kagome is similarly brilliant... though that
has been used in anime quite often.
4. Van Slanzar de Fanel (Tenkuu no Escaflowne)
I loved seeing him mature throughout the series--a classic coming of age story if there ever was one. And he's another one of those characters who's brash and cocky at first glance, yet really a lot more tender-hearted the more we get to know him. Like Inuyasha, he's also involved in a love triangle
and a brotherly feud, making him all the more interesting and three-dimensional for it. He's just a really awesome character.
5. Vash the Stampede (Trigun)
Yet another walking contradiction. For the first half of the series, he's the biggest goofball on the planet--he seemingly has no clue what's going on, and just happens to be as lucky as he is brainless. Of course, we soon learn better as the series goes on. I remember being absolutely captivated during the episode where we finally found out about his true past, Rem and Knives, etc. Geez... talk about character depth. And Vash is just about the sweetest anime guy I can think of--I've lost count of how many times I wanted to run over and hug him during Trigun. Yet he's also a superhuman badass. How cool is that??
6. Urameshi Yusuke (Yu Yu Hakusho)
Take the first half of what I said about Inuyasha and cut and paste it here. Yusuke's a smartass punk with a heart of gold. You can't go wrong with that. And he only gets cooler as the series goes on. Plus, he's a brilliant fighter--I haven't yet seen anyone from another anime who could seriously take on a DBZ fighter, but Yusuke could sure give them a run for their money someday.
7. Trowa Barton (Gundam Wing)
Technically, I think Duo and Heero are better characters, but Trowa is my
favorite, and in my book that's all that counts. ~_^ He's definitely the smartest Gundam pilot. I like how he just calmly observes while everyone else feuds over politics and faces off in Gundam battles. I also like how he's so quiet all the time, yet his Gundam has the most heavy artillery on the show. (It's always the quiet ones, after all.) What I did
not like was how helpless he got during most of his brief period of amnesia... but when he recovered, he was just as badass as always. And I love the clown thing too. And the hair. Okay, I'm done...
8. Matsuda Takato (Digimon Tamers)
Anyone who's seen anything of Digimon can tell you that the goggle boys are always the most brash and bullheaded of the lot. That's why I love the fact that Takato is actually a shy, sensitive kid who daydreams about adventures all day long and cries fairly easily. He's not the kind of character you usually see cast as a hero at all--much less as the main character. But man, could this kid do great things when the chips were down. He made Tamers my favorite Digimon series by far.
9. Tasuki (Kou Shun'u) (Fushigi Yuugi)
Cut and paste what I said about Inuyasha and Yusuke and insert here. Yet another bullheaded character with a heart of gold, etc. etc. Tasuki didn't become my favorite FY character until
Nuriko's death. It just floored me that the guy who was always fighting with Tamahome and the others, never taking anything seriously, always talking in Kansai dialect and setting things on fire, was the one who actually cried the most. After that I saw Tasuki in a whole new light. The same thing happened after the second OAV. I'm definitely a Tasuki fangirl now.
10. Son Gohan (Dragonball Z)
Gohan is the only character I can think of who we actually get to see literally grow up during a series, from a shy, scared toddler into one of the most powerful men in the universe. (If you disregard the fact that later on he gave it all up to become a professional geek... ::sigh:: ) That alone gets him onto my list. I also always did like the fact that Gohan hated fighting, and yet had the potential to be the strongest character on DBZ. (Actually, at one or two points in the series, I think he was.) And it was great seeing him conquer all his fears one by one, growing stronger and more capable as the series went on. And I'll forgive him for Saiyaman.

There you go. Hmm... a list composed almost entirely of hot guys... kind of suspicious...

(And a free Shippou to anyone who actually read all of that.)
